Event Details

Discover the fascinating world of science and art in the deep ocean with Campus del Mar! As part of their innovative Scientists meet Artists initiative, we are pleased to invite you to a live connection with renowned artist Elena Alonso Fernandez. Imagine being aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s oceanographic vessel Falkor (too), together with this artist-in-residence on the “Ultra fine-scale seafloor mapping” expedition.

Elena Alonso Fernández is a visual artist from Vigo who works at the intersection of painting and participatory art. She explores the contemporary potential of portraiture through participatory approaches that allow humans and non-humans to become active co-creators of their representation. Her most recent project “Portrait of a kelp forest” focuses on the importance of the Galician kelp forests, collaborating with marine biologists, coastal communities of the Ría de Vigo and a seaweed. During his stay on board the Falkor (too) of the Schmidt Ocean Institute, Alonso carries out his new interdisciplinary research on deep-sea ecosystems and the ecological importance of hydrothermal vents. The expedition led by Dr. John Jamieson focuses on the study of active and non-active vents in the Galapagos National Park area https://schmidtocean.org/cruise/ultra-fine-scale-seafloor-mapping/.

Elena studied Fine Arts at the Universities of Salmanca, Helsinki and Barcelona. In 2018 she graduated in the postgraduate master’s degree “Art in Context” at the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK) with Prof. Dr. Jörg Heiser. Her work was exhibited at the New Media Society in Tehran, the AHNE Festival in Helsinki, during the XIII Havana Biennial and in several group and solo exhibitions in Berlin, where she lives and works since 2011.

We invite you to enter into the life aboard an oceanographic expedition and to explore the unique synergy between Science and Art by the hand of this renowned artist from Vigo.
